ABOUT ROBERT DES JARLAIT
Robert DesJarlait (Endaso-Giizhik) is an Ojibwe fine artist, muralist, writer, historian, and educator from Miskwaagamiiwi-zaaga'igan (Red Lake Nation). He says: “My paintings are personal visions of a tribal reality. My stylized, figurative images compose a micro/macro-scopic Ojibwe universe. Interwoven in this universe are creation stories, history, customs and traditions, and my central theme – Ojibwe Manidoowiwin, the tribal spirit of the Ojibwe people.”
His career as an artist spans over four decades. His paintings and illustrations focus on Ojibwe family life, cultural traditions, and origin stories. He has served as a cultural mentor and advisor on numerous public art projects. He also has illustrated curriculum units for American Indian Education Programs and American Indian agencies and organizations in Minnesota. His recent work is in private collections, including permanent collections at University of Minnesota / Morris Campus and East Central Regional Arts Gallery. Robert is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and Reference Encyclopedia of the American Indian.
